Volume calculator
Choose a solid, enter its measurements and get its volume.
Volume
Volume: 27
How it works
Volume is the space inside a solid, in cubic units. Prisms and cylinders are the area of the base times the height.
Pointed solids such as cones and pyramids hold exactly one third of the matching prism. A sphere is 4/3 πr³, and a capsule is a cylinder with a hemisphere on each end.
Formula
cube = s³ box = l × w × h cylinder = πr²h sphere = 4/3 πr³ cone = 1/3 πr²h pyramid = 1/3 l × w × h capsule = πr²h + 4/3 πr³
Worked example
A cylinder with radius 2 and height 5 holds π × 2² × 5 ≈ 62.83185307 cubic units. A sphere with radius 2 holds 4/3 × π × 2³ ≈ 33.51032164.
Questions people ask
How do I convert the volume to litres?
Measure in centimetres and divide the result by 1000: 1 litre is exactly 1000 cm³. In metres, multiply by 1000.
Why is a cone one third of a cylinder?
Slicing shows each layer of the cone shrinks with the square of the height; adding the layers up gives exactly one third.
What if my shape is irregular?
Split it into simple solids and add their volumes, or measure the water it displaces.
