Density calculator
ρ = m ÷ V, solved for whichever value you are missing.
Density
Density: 2,000
- In kg/m³
- 2,000 kg/m³
- In g/cm³
- 2 g/cm³
How it works
Density is mass per unit of volume. Rearranging gives mass = density × volume and volume = mass ÷ density.
The main result is in the units you chose. Inputs are converted with exact factors (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft³ = 0.028316846592 m³). Note that 1 g/cm³ equals 1000 kg/m³.
Formula
ρ = m ÷ V m = ρ × V V = m ÷ ρ 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³
Worked example
500 g in 250 cm³ has a density of 500 ÷ 250 = 2 g/cm³, which is 2000 kg/m³. 250 cm³ of water (1000 kg/m³) has a mass of 250 g.
Questions people ask
What is the density of water?
About 1000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³) near 4 °C, slightly less when warmer: about 998 kg/m³ at 20 °C.
Why do some things float?
An object floats when its average density is lower than that of the liquid around it.
Is specific gravity the same as density?
Specific gravity is density divided by the density of water, so it has no unit. A density of 2 g/cm³ is a specific gravity of about 2.
