About these units
Density is mass divided by volume. The SI unit is the kilogram per cubic metre. Water at about 4 °C has a density close to 1000 kg/m³, which is 1 g/cm³ or 1 kg/L, so metric densities in g/cm³ are easy to compare with water.
In the US and UK, density is often given in pounds per cubic foot or pounds per gallon, for fuels, liquids and building materials. Check whether a pound-per-gallon figure uses the US or the imperial gallon.
