About these units
Temperature measures how hot or cold something is. The SI base unit is the kelvin, which starts at absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature; nothing can be colder than 0 K (−273.15 °C).
Celsius is used almost everywhere for weather and cooking: water freezes at 0 °C and boils at about 100 °C at sea level. Fahrenheit is used in the United States, where water freezes at 32 °F. A step of one degree Celsius equals 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Because the scales have different zero points, converting needs a multiplication and an addition, not just a factor.

Questions people ask
What is the formula from Celsius to Fahrenheit?
°F = °C × 1.8 + 32. For the reverse, °C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
At −40 degrees: −40 °C is exactly −40 °F.
Why is there no degree sign with kelvin?
The kelvin is an absolute unit, so since 1967 it is written simply as K: 300 K, not 300 °K.
