Decimal hours: 7.75 h
- Unrounded
- 7.75
- Total minutes

How it works
An hour has 60 minutes, so each minute is 1/60 of an hour. To get decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours.
To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes. The hours and minutes result is rounded to the nearest minute; the version with seconds is exact to the second.
Payroll systems often round to 2 decimal places, so 20 minutes shows as 0.33 hours.
Formula
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 Minutes = decimal part × 60
Worked example
7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Going back, 7.75 hours is 7 hours and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
