How it works
Your age is counted in whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over. A month is counted when the same day number comes round again; if that day does not exist in a month (the 31st in April, say), the last day of the month is used instead.
People born on 29 February have a real birthday only in leap years. In other years some count it on 28 February and others on 1 March; choose the convention you use. Legal rules for this differ between countries.
Totals count calendar days between the two dates. Total hours are days × 24 and ignore clock changes and the time of birth.
Formula
Age = whole years + whole months + remaining days Total days = date − date of birth Total hours = total days × 24
Worked example
Someone born on 15 June 1990 (a Friday) is 36 years, 4 months and 4 days old on 19 October 2026. That is 13,275 days, or 1,896 weeks and 3 days. The next birthday, their 37th, is on 15 June 2027, 239 days later.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my exact age?
Subtract the birth year from the current year, then take one off if your birthday has not yet come this year. Months and days are counted the same way from your last birthday.
When does someone born on 29 February turn a year older?
In leap years, on 29 February. In common years it depends on the convention: 28 February or 1 March. Legal rules differ between countries, so check locally if it matters.
Why is my age in months not my age in years times 12?
It is, plus the months since your last birthday. Total months counts every whole month that has passed, so 36 years and 4 months is 436 months.
