About these units
Torque is a turning force: a force multiplied by its distance from the axis. The SI unit is the newton metre (N·m). Car engines and bolt tightening specs in Europe and Asia use N·m; in the US they use pound-feet (lbf·ft, often written ft-lb) and, for small fasteners, pound-inches.
Older Japanese and European documents sometimes give kilogram-force metres. All factors here are exact, based on the pound, the foot and standard gravity.

Questions people ask
How many lb-ft is one Nm?
About 0.737562 lb-ft. One lb-ft is exactly 1.3558179483314004 N·m.
Are ft-lb and lb-ft the same?
For torque, yes: both mean pound-force times feet. Strictly, ft-lb is the energy unit and lb-ft the torque unit, with the same value.
How do I convert lb-in to lb-ft?
Divide by 12, the number of inches in a foot.
