About these units

Digital information is counted in bits; eight bits make a byte. Decimal prefixes multiply by powers of 1000: a kilobyte (kB) is 1000 bytes and a gigabyte (GB) is 1 000 000 000 bytes. Drive makers and network speeds use these.

Binary prefixes multiply by powers of 1024: a kibibyte (KiB) is 1024 bytes and a gibibyte (GiB) is 1 073 741 824 bytes. Windows and some apps measure in binary units but label them KB, MB and GB, which is why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 GB.

Questions people ask

Is a megabyte 1000 or 1024 kilobytes?

By the international standard, 1 MB = 1000 kB. The 1024-based unit is the mebibyte (MiB). Some software still uses MB for the binary size.

Why does my 1 TB drive show less space?

The drive holds 10¹² bytes, but your computer divides by 1024⁴ and shows about 931 "GB", which are really GiB.

How many bits are in a byte?

Eight. Internet speeds are given in bits, file sizes in bytes.
