How it works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. Add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people.

With rounding on, each share is rounded up to the next whole unit of currency, so the tip grows slightly; the effective tip shows the percentage you actually leave.

Customs differ widely: in some countries service is already included in the bill, in others tipping is not expected. Check the bill before adding a tip.

Formula

Tip = bill × T ÷ 100
Total = bill + tip
Per person = total ÷ people

Worked example

A bill of 86.40 with a 15% tip is 86.40 × 1.15 = 99.36, or 33.12 each for three people. Rounding up to 34 each makes the total 102.00, a tip of 15.60, about 18.06%.

Questions people ask

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Both are common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is a frequent convention where tax is shown separately; enter whichever amount you prefer.

What if service is already included?

Then the bill already contains a service charge. Set the tip to 0 or to whatever extra you want to leave.
