How it works
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted; with an even count it is the mean of the two middle values.
The mode is the value that appears most often. If several values tie, all of them are listed; if nothing repeats there is no mode. The range is the maximum minus the minimum.
Formula
mean = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n median = middle value of the sorted list range = max − min
Worked example
For 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, 8: the sum is 116 and the count is 7, so the mean is 116 ÷ 7 ≈ 16.571. Sorted, the middle value is 15 (the median), 8 appears twice (the mode) and the range is 42 − 4 = 38.
Questions people ask
Which average should I use?
The mean uses every value but is pulled by outliers. The median is better for skewed data such as incomes or house prices.
Can a list have more than one mode?
Yes. 1, 1, 2, 2, 3 has two modes, 1 and 2, and is called bimodal.
Are the results rounded?
The sum and mean are calculated exactly from the numbers you typed; only the display is rounded.
