Future value calculator

What will an amount and regular payments be worth after a number of periods?

Formula Finance

%

Use the rate for one period: for monthly periods, the annual rate ÷ 12.

Future value

Future value: US$1,628.89

Total put in
US$1,000.00
Interest earned
US$628.89

How it works

Future value grows a sum at a fixed rate for a number of periods. The rate and periods must match: an annual rate with years, or a monthly rate with months.

Regular payments form an annuity. Paid at the end of each period it is an ordinary annuity; paid at the start, an annuity due, which earns one extra period of interest on every payment.

Formula

FV = PV × (1 + r)^n + PMT × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r
× (1 + r) on the payment part for payments at the start
At 0%: FV = PV + PMT × n

Worked example

1,000 at 5% a year for 10 years becomes 1,000 × 1.05¹⁰ = 1,628.89. Adding 100 at the end of each year gives 2,886.68 in total.

Questions people ask

How is this different from the compound interest calculator?

This one works per period with a single rate, as in finance textbooks and spreadsheets. The compound interest calculator takes an annual rate and a compounding frequency.

Does it match the FV function in a spreadsheet?

Yes, apart from the sign: spreadsheets show money you pay in as negative. Here every amount is entered as positive.
