About these units
Acceleration is the rate of change of speed. The SI unit is the metre per second squared. Accelerations felt by people, in cars, aircraft and rides, are often given as multiples of g, the standard acceleration of gravity, exactly 9.80665 m/s².
Actual gravity varies slightly across Earth's surface, from about 9.78 to 9.83 m/s², but the standard value is fixed by definition. Geophysicists use the gal, one centimetre per second squared.
