How it works
Unix time counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds, so every day is exactly 86,400 seconds. Times before 1970 are negative.
JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds instead of seconds: a 13-digit timestamp is usually milliseconds.
All results are in UTC. To see the time in your own zone, add your offset from UTC.
Formula
Unix time = days since 1970-01-01 × 86400 + hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds Milliseconds = seconds × 1000
Worked example
1700000000 seconds is 2023-11-14T22:13:20Z, a Tuesday. Midnight UTC on 1 January 2026 is 1767225600 seconds, or 1767225600000 milliseconds.
Questions people ask
Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?
For current dates, 10 digits means seconds and 13 digits means milliseconds.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit number overflow at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Systems using 64-bit numbers are not affected.
Does Unix time include leap seconds?
No. Every day counts as exactly 86,400 seconds, so leap seconds are not visible in Unix time.
